Sweet Child of Mine

Do you ever miss home?  Our Editor Dan shares a touching story about the tenderness of the Father’s Heart for those who are living far away from family and friends.

Last Friday my wife Rachel was feeling especially homesick.  Being from Malaysia and coming to a whole new world and life out here in LA, she sometimes needs a little taste of home to keep her going.  So we decided to have a late dinner at The Spice Table in Little Tokyo, one of our favorite restaurants and one of the only places in LA where you can find truly authentic Malaysian / Singaporean flavors.

We’re regulars there, and we almost always order the same thing, but this time for some reason we decided to try something different and ordered the Kaya Toast - which is a buttered toast with coconut jam that you dip in a mixture of soft poached egg, soy sauce and white pepper.

It had been a hard day and a long week for Rachel.

Thanksgiving on Skid Row-God’s Love Is Everywhere

Sleeping on Skid Row Thanksgiving Eve from Enoch Magazine on Vimeo.

Two years ago, our friends from ENOCH Magazine and the Jonah Project team camped out with the homeless of Skid Row on Thanksgiving Eve through a project called “Camp Jesus.”  The team prayed for people, shared God’s love and experienced what it is to live in the shoes of a less fortunate person.  It is important to remember that what these individuals encounter in just one night are circumstances that those on Skid Row face every dayThis Thanksgiving, let us cherish and be grateful for all that God has given us, and perhaps even extend His love to those who need it the most.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” - Isaiah 61:1

Our friends at Enoch Magazine and Christian Documentaries share an incredibly moving video of missions outreach in our own backyard - Skid Row in downtown LA.  Watch how the love in action of the Fred Jordan Mission brings healing, restoration and transformation to those close to God’s heart.

Broken Knee Healed on Skid Row

God remembers those we have forgotten.  Will you follow when He calls you to love the unlovable?  Our friend Arielle came all the way from Singapore to be a missionary here in downtown LA’s Skid Row and shares an amazing testimony of healing and love in a place we so often ignore.

I was a volunteer with a church group that hits Skid Row regularly. We feed them, befriend them, pray with them & simply make ourselves available for God to touch them.

On a typical morning on 27th May 2011, when we were walking around telling people about free food, my friends spotted a lady (let’s call her T) limping along the streets. T was knocked down by a car a month ago & broke her right knee. Her surgery was in fact due the next day but was still open to us praying for her…[click “Read More” below to continue]

Imperfect Memories

“At a certain point, you just believe there is a divine architect who will course correct for you even when you try to go astray.”

The human memory is a fascinating thing. Deep in our consciences and sub-consciousness, our memories are stored in our psyches – past pains, experiences, triumphs, insights, dreams, and hopes. All our fears, wildest vulnerabilities, insecurities, and darkest secrets. It stores our greatest passions too alongside our greatest moments, for better or for worse.  Sometimes I like to think of our memories as the ultimate culmination of us… the things that have shaped us, who we truly are, what we’ve become.  But they say we can only access about 20% of our brains, so I wonder just how accurate our library catalog of old memories really is.

The Reality of Healing Prayer

Our friend Thomas shares an incredible story of physical healing… right before his eyes!

So, I’m gonna be completely honest, and say that I absolutely did not ever expect what happened to me yesterday to ever happen to me in my life! Never, ever! But the funny thing is, now that it happened, all I can think is that this kinda stuff needs to happen to me all the time, and in other people’s lives too! Pretty funny, huh? But before I even tell you what happened let me give you some background information.

Back in 2005, I got into one heck of a car accident. In the middle of a left turn, I was hit by oncoming traffic that ran the red light. My car literally exploded, and flew several feet back from the impact. I blacked out, and when I finally came through I remembered smelling battery acid and burning electrical wires.

Wineskins

Ever feel like you’ve been distant from God?  Are you praying, and still waiting for an answer?  Bonnie, a Voice for WitnessLA, shares her experience of wrestling with life, prayer, and her purpose as a designer.

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved. -Matthew 9:17

For the past 3 week a restlessness loomed over my mind. Nothing is horribly wrong in my life. In fact, nothing is wrong. Yet, I’ve felt a distance from God that has brought me into  questioning my beliefs. Did God abandon me? Did I do something wrong? Why am I feeling this way?

It started with me walking into a building that could still be the perfect place to run Freedom and Fashion out of. High ceilings, live/work zoned, plenty of parking and affordable rent. This was a miracle. Yet, when speaking with the owner, he said he had promised someone else to look at it before he offers it to us. The most disappointing news was that she was using it for storage space.
