Down to My Last Dollar

Have you ever found yourself completely broke?  Without a dollar to your name, or any money coming in?  Our Story Editor Alix shares a powerful modern-day fishes and loaves story of how when he was at the end of his rope - literally down to his last dollar - he prayed to God in thankfulness and received a financial miracle.

“Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.”  (John 6:11 NIV)

It was warm, early December afternoon as I walked through the entrance of In-N-Out burger.  In less than a few minutes I could be seen exiting those same doors, having found out that I did not have any money in my account and thus could not even buy a hamburger.

Unexpected Illness

Our friend’s father was diagnosed with cancer during a work trip from Los Angeles to Seoul, South Korea. The unexpected news forced the family to cling onto God tighter than they did before as fear and uncertainty about surgery, chemotherapy, logistics, and finance draped over them. Our friend is in a small group in Los Angeles who has been praying for his situation and by the amazing grace of God, the WitnessLA family was given an update on how God has answered their prayers during this difficult time.

Prayer for responsiveness to surgery and chemo, and for the best possible medical care.
Prayer update:
There were concerns that the surgery and chemotherapy would not be effective in battling the cancer given its late discovery. However, my dad’s surgery went extremely well in removing the cancer tumors. His recovery has been great and his chemo sessions are moving along without a hitch. He just received another full diagnosis and the chemo drugs that he’s been receiving seem to be really effective. He hasn’t had bad side effects from is, aside from the usual throwing up and not being able to eat for few days. Although he has lost a lot of weight, 25lbs to date, from this treatment, it’s been a blessing since he was a little heavy. It’s hard for him for maybe one or two days after the treatment but he’s otherwise been his normal self.  So all in all, everything is going fantastic.

Food for Thought: God, why so silent?

Have you ever experienced a length of time during which you prayed countlessly for God to answer this one specific prayer or dilemma that you’re facing, and all you get was silence? One of our editors went through that exact situation, and got her answer from God today.

A couple of months ago, my fiancé’s stereo system in his car was damaged. One of his CDs was stuck in the system, and it could not be ejected.  This led me to a hunt for the ultimate car stereo with the latest functionalities, from built-in Bluetooth for hands free calling to an auxiliary input for his iPod and a touchscreen.  During this search, I realized that the people who install these systems earn a substantial amount in labor charges, sometimes even more than the cost of the system itself. Not only that, having a built-in Bluetooth as one of my requirements raised the price even more.

[Click on “Read More” below to continue]

I was terribly conflicted. On the one hand, this was the best time (so I thought) to get him a new stereo because his was broken; but on the other hand, I’m looking at an outflow of cash that is sufficient to purchase an iPad 2 or something extravagant. Because this is a large sum of money, I also wanted to be sure that I was getting the best deal I can in the market. So I researched…and prayed…and researched…and played around with the systems at BestBuy and Fry’s…and I could not find something that I was comfortable with.

Throughout this whole process, I’ve chosen the best car stereo in terms of functionality and affordability, but my heart still felt heavy. I prayed for God to lead me to the right decision, the right stereo, and the right dealer. I got nothing. I soon abandoned the idea of getting him one and just told him to suck it up and live with it. I probably should have mentioned earlier that he listens to his med school podcasts while driving to school and clinics, so it wasn’t just for pure entertainment. Left with nothing but a tuner that works, instead of being fluent in his Boards material, he was reciting Adele lyrics and is pretty certain that he’s got moves like Jagger (so he thinks).

A week ago, I was looking for ideas for his 25th birthday present. I decided to give the stereo a second shot. Long story short, I did the same research, said the same prayers, asked for the same guidance, and this time, I actually found a place in Ontario that does really good affordable work through Yelp. This struck me as odd, because before, I used the same sites to look for the same information, but the results were less than satisfying. In fact, that Ontario dealer was not even on the list.

My conclusion as to why God was silent for months until now? My circumstances and I were not ready. The situation was not ideal for His answer. Now that I think about it, I remember our bills for the past few months were quite high because we had numerous one-time, non-recurring expenses. I know that God is plentiful and bountiful, which is why I prayed for him to A BIT more plentiful a few months ago.

Matthew 6:32-34 says “For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

My parents always remind me of those verses, that God will always provide when you need it.  And if He’s not giving it to you now, that means you don’t need it. They’re right. It’s true - we didn’t need the stereo at that time. We could wait. When we wait in silence for God’s answer, we know that He is preparing us for something bigger, something better. The outcome is usually more than what we expect to receive.

As for the fiancé, he was overwhelmed when he received his present today. He thinks the system is magnificent and is accompanied with an equally grandiose price tag. I actually got everything for less than the market price, but I’ll let him hold on to that thought because I get extra fiancé points.

Buying Time

Can God move Time for us? Read our sister’s story on how God intervened at her work place.

I can’t tell you how amazed I am with God’s goodness. He has blessed me in so many ways and I hope that my story will encourage you in whatever stage you may be in.

Sometimes, I think prayer is pointless. All of us feel this at times, right? BUT, let me tell you this-God is the God of impossible. I was coming close to a huge deadline for work. I wasn’t stressing out, but I was a little concerned at the back of my head about meeting the deadline by Tuesday.

Where did the time go? I was working like a chicken with its head cut off. I walked in to the office this morning and I couldn’t believe that today was Tuesday – I had so much work in front of me. Silently, in my own head, I lifted up a prayer.

“God, You are the God of the impossible. If anyone can push my deadline, it would be You. I don’t know how You’re going to do it, but I know that I’m in Your favor”.

I went on with my day and I forgot about my prayer. I did as much as I could throughout the day with no fear.

At the end of that day, I met with the project managers of the project I was working on to go over some last minute details. This is where God came in. They said to me,

“Didn’t we mention that we don’t need these materials until next Monday?” they said.

“Ok, no, but thank you for informing me that the deadline is postponed.” I replied.

In my head I was thinking,

OK WHAT? Did I hear them correctly? I started laughing hysterically! God, YOU are sooooo hilarious!

Prayer works, folks! Whatever it is, tell your Father what you need and within reason, He will grant it! Know that God can make the impossible possible and that He cares about big and small things alike. Have faith and trust in your Father!

Food For Thought (Dan): “You’re Really Lucky”

Today I had to go to the County Recorder’s Office in East LA to pick up a copy of my marriage license, and when I got there the line was atrocious - person after person queued up and fanning themselves in the late summer heat.  I was frustrated by the wait, and my patience was really being tested because I’ve become an impatient person when it comes to wasting time.

After more than an hour in the long winding line inching forward ever so slowly (and a dozen or so checks to Facebook Mobile), I finally made it up to the service window.  After all the wait, my heart sank.  The teller at the window told me my Certificate would be mailed and they couldn’t give me a copy in person unless it had already been entered by the County Recorder.  She had to check for me.

At that moment, I prayed in full faith “Lord Jesus, I really need this certificate today so we can file our applications by our deadline.  Would you somehow make it ready for me?  I know you can do anything.”  Despite my prayer, I was still prepared for the worst.

The teller looked up at me with a smile.  “You’re really lucky, you know?  It says here it’s JUST been entered, so I can give you your certificate today.  It normally takes six weeks, but yours was somehow entered in only two.  You’re really lucky.”

“Yes, I guess I am really lucky,” I said.  Walking back to my car, I couldn’t help but smile.

Pray at all times, pray for the impossible, and watch God move Heaven and Earth out of love for you.  Just believe!  “All things are possible for one who believes.” Mark 9:23 (ESV)

Prayer for Healing… Fail?

Here is a powerful story of how our writer, Ed, learned an equation that most find difficult to accept: Failure + Faith x Perseverance = Success. Sometimes we are so fixated on doing what is “right” or what we believe is pleasing to God that we overlook the greater purpose: Bringing Him joy. Then, when we wonder why our good deeds aren’t acknowledged, God reminds us that it isn’t about us. The fruits of our goodness will stir change, but we must have faith, patience and perseverance.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-5 NIV)

A lot of times we see and hear about amazing testimonies of God. What we rarely hear about is the journey that got them there. One day I was on the subway praying and asking the Lord for an opportunity to see somebody healed. I’d watched a lot of testimonies from Bethel Church and wanted to see it firsthand. After I finished praying the subway reached my station. The doors opened up and low and behold, a girl in a wheelchair with a cast on her leg was sitting outside.

[Click “Read More” below to continue]

I stepped out and stood in complete shock at how quickly God answered my prayer. Completely paralyzed by fear, I didn’t know how to approach the situation. I was dumbfounded and as I processed the situation, the girl and a guy pushing the wheelchair went their way.

After they were gone, I was really discouraged by my lack of faith and felt like I had just let God down. God set me up perfectly to pray for a girl to be healed, but I didn’t do my part. I left the station and got on the bus to get home. On my way home, I decided that I was not going until I prayed for someone. On the way home, the busy passed by a hospital and I got off. Walking into the lobby, again I saw another man in a wheelchair who also had a cast on his leg. I sheepishly walked right passed him into the hospital as he rolled by. Sitting in the lobby of the hospital, I was so frustrated again and wondered why I was scared. I prayed and prayed and finally gathered enough courage to go and pray for the man. Going back outside I saw him from a distance sitting outside smoking a cigarette.
After buying a drink at Starbucks, I stood next to him and pretended that I was waiting for someone. 10 minutes or so went by before I finally asked him what happened to his leg. It went something like this.

Me: Hi… What happened to your leg?
Poor bystander in wheel chair: I got into a bike accident.
Me: Does it hurt?
Poor bystander in wheel chair: Yes.
—- Awkward silence- Another 5 minutes go by.
Me: Um do you believe in miracles? Because I do.
Poor bystander in wheel chair: Uh.. sure.
Me: I believe that God can heal people.
Poor bystander in wheel chair: Okay, I believe that people heal over time.
Me: Yeah, but I think God can heal you right now.
Poor bystander in wheel chair: (Grin)
Me: Can I pray for you????
Poor bystander in wheel chair: No
—- Awkward silence. As the two of us sit there, I tried to rescue the situation but all is lost. Another 5 minutes go by.
Me: Can I assist you and push you somewhere?
—- The man rolls away in his wheelchair.

Completely humiliated I walked home in defeat, feeling as though I wasn’t holy, “anointed” or gifted enough. I said to myself, “This isn’t for me.” I even said something along the lines of, “I am not Jaeson Ma…”
As I kept kicking myself and complaining, the Lord spoke to me. He gently showed me that it isn’t by my strength that people are healed. It isn’t because of how “clean” or how pure I am that God uses me. It isn’t by ANYTHING I can do. It is purely by His grace and my faith in Him. That day the Lord broke away the lies that put so much pressure on myself to perform the impossible.
A few weeks later, I met a brother in the church who had already actively been seeing people get healed and walking in God’s anointing. I talked to him and asked if he could show me how he prays for the sick. We went out onto the streets and this time I saw how differently he approached people. The way he talked to strangers and the compassion he had was so authentic. It was so casual and natural. This brother even shared testimonies with people on the street and encouraged them that God wanted to heal them.
Since that time, I’ve prayed for dozens of people on the streets and seen many of them get healed. What I’ve learned is that when we take risks and fail miserably, we have the opportunity into walk into success or doubt and become jaded. God is much more concerned with our character than he is with our comfort.
How badly do you want to see God heal someone? Will you be discouraged and give up after praying for a few people? I encourage you to proceed as breakthrough is right around the corner. Seek and you shall find, ask and you shall receive.

Moving Heavens and Earth

Are you bold in what you pray for?  Recently, I’ve become absolutely convinced that God will move Heavens and Earth out of love for us if we just ask.  That He can - and will - do anything to show you His love, even change the weather.

Now before you strike me as some kind of radical or crazy person, Jesus himself said “With man this impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

I just got married on September 18th.  It was a Sunday.  For three or four days before the wedding, I woke up each day to dark grey overcast skies.  I checked the weather each day, hopeful there would somehow be sun for the biggest day of our lives…[click “Read More” below to continue]

Something Was Missing

Does your church need a wake up call?  Our friend Stephen shares an inspiring story of God bringing the Holy Spirit back to a church that was just going through the motions.

I have been attending a church for the past 5 Sundays and it’s the kind of place where it’s hard to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit at all.  They come sing their hymns, listen to the sermon and say their goodbyes and church is over. The members are mostly in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. The reason I’ve been going is because a Korean church rents this place and the Korean church is also pretty much Holy Spirit-less.

One day, the Father told me to keep attending and there will be a chance to pray for people from both services and they will get healed and this will be the sparkplug to invite the Holy Spirit to come…[click “Read More” below to continue]
